This session focuses on the role of social determinants of health in educating people on dialysis about the risk of infection with central venous catheters. A roundtable with an interdisciplinary team including a nephrologist, dialysis nurse, technician, and social worker convened and discussed communication strategies to reduce infection risk for people with central venous catheters taking social determinants of health into account.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, the participant will be able to:
  • Analyze the role of social determinants of health (SDoH) in educating dialysis patients about the risk of infection with central venous catheters.
  • Demonstrate effective communication strategies for discussing infection prevention with a patient who is newly starting dialysis and requires a central venous catheter, taking individual SDoH into account.
  • Identify strategies to reduce the risk of infection for dialysis patients with central venous catheters.
  • Summarize how all members of the care team can contribute to patient education and support ongoing reinforcement of infection prevention practices.
